When a student is asked to ‘invent’ a solution to a problem, the student must draw upon previous knowledge, skills, and experience. The student also recognizes areas where new learning must be acquired in order to understand or address the problem. This information must then be applied, analyzed, synthesized and evaluated. Through critical and creative thinking and problem-solving, ideas become reality as children create inventive solutions, illustrate their ideas, and make models of their inventions.
WHAT IS INVENTIVE THINKING?
Inventive thinking frequently involves combining concepts or elements from different realms that would not normally be put together. Sometimes inventors disregard the boundaries between distinctly territories or fields. The ability, to think is God’s gift to someone. I say, any idea which comes to anyone in order to invent is from God. All the incredible ideas that were thought not to be able to exist are given to people by God. People with ideas rule the world. Our prayers, everyday, should be God giving us the ideas, wisdom and confidence to bring out something new to the whole world.
I tell people, our ideas are likened to the case of variable water vessels by the shores of a stream. The owner of these vessels comes and then has to make a choice. He can decide to pick up any of the water vessels, to put water in it. It may be beautiful, dirty, fat, thin or even be made of silver. But, it all depends on the owner. When water is put into the chosen vessel, people or family, can then come and take water from that vessel, thereby making it known. We, humans are the vessels. The owner is God Almighty. The water is the idea. God can decide to choose anyone of us. And all we have to do is to (give our lives whole heartedly to him/praise His Holy name).
In order to make ourselves prepared for this, there are some ways to promote creative thinking and idea generation.
“To stimulate creativity, one must develop the childlike inclination for play and the childlike desire for recognition.” #Albert Einstein
The process of innovation and creation begins with the analysis of current situations. Once we know where we are, what we want, or what we don’t want, the next step is the creation and exploration of ideas and alternatives.
Idea creation should be supported and facilitated by all members of an organization. We must feel free to create. We should know that the generation of the ideas is of great importance to everyone. We should feel comfortable and in a supportive environment for this to occur (children don’t play unless they feel safe).
Bring in toys or puzzles that require manual manipulation. Toys unlock reasoning and assist in activating parts of the brain required for creativity.
“Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun.” #Mary Lou Cook
Finally, to end this article I say “you may not seem it, but you are a genius”.
